Located just 30km
from Jerez lies the wonderful, historic town
of Arcos de la Frontera situated on cliffs high
above a meander in the River Guadalete. Arcos
is a typical defensive hill top town with cobbled
streets leading up to a castle which was built
in the fifteenth century on Moorish foundations.
The many Roman remains signify the town’s
importance throughout history. In more recent
years the town has benefited from tourism and
in 1962 it was declared of special national importance.
If time in Arcos permits, see one of the five
convents. The Convent of the Mecedarian Nuns
is the only closed door convent left in Arcos
but biscuits made by the nuns can be bought
at the main entrance. Other important buildings
include, the Palace of the Count of Aguilar
and several mansion houses that can be visited.
The castle is an Arab military fortress but
now a private
residence so cannot be visited.
The old town is a maze of steep streets opening
into small open squares where true Andalucian
atmosphere can be sampled, day or night. The
tourist information office offers a guided
tour of the old town, starting in the Plaza
de Cabildo where the tourist office is located.
From this same square, wonderful views can
be had over the valley. There is a Parador
hotel in Plaza de Cabildo which is a good place
to take a quiet drink and appreciate the spectacular
view in a relaxed atmosphere. The large fifteenth
century gothic-Mudejar chuch of Santa Maria
de la Asuncion dominates one side of Plaza
de Cabildo. San Pedro Chapel is also set right
on the edge of the sheer cliffs with a fine
baptismal chapel. Arcos also has plenty of
locally produced crafts and ceramics available
for sale. |
