Villaluenga |
Located
10km south of Grazalema and 10km northeast of
Ubrique, is the charming village of Villaluenga
del Rosario. Perched on a winding mountain road,
beneath a large crag it is the highest village
in Cadiz Province. The village has only 500 inhabitants
and is picturesque with its steep narrow streets
and white houses with flower filled balconies.
The village has a small bullring partly cut out
of the surrounding rock and on October 7th the
festival of the Virgen del Rosario is celebrated
with a bullfight.
There is also a swimming pool
in the village. Nearby, the caves of La Yedra
and La Rajada drip with
stalagmites
and stalactites.
It is also the birthplace of the poet Pedro Pérez
Clotet. It was an important settlement in the
Arab age and the Civil War was bitterly fought
here when one of the village’s two churches
was burned down. The ruins are located in the
top part of the village and it is now a cemetery.
Today the village’s main activities are
cattle farming and agriculture. The famous cheese
maker Payoyo is located in the village and makes
cheese from local ewes and goats milk. |
