El Puerto is located in the Northeast of the Cadiz province, on the Guadalete River outlet, in the Bay of Cadiz.

The mild climate of El Puerto resulted in the first Botanical Garden in the area being planted in the eighteenth century. The area consists of a number of different types of geography; the coastal beaches and marshlands and the pine forests. The golden beaches of La Puntilla and Valdelgrana attract a large number of summer visitors.

El Puerto houses one of Andalucia’s most famous bullrings and the long tradition of fights continues, with regular bullfights
being staged throughout the year. The bullring was opened in 1880, is the third largest in Spain and is celebrated by aficionados. A mosaic inside the entrance records the words of legendary Sevillano bullfighter Joselito who fought in the ring: “He who has not seen bulls in El Puerto does not know what bullfighting is.”

The town is also renowned for its sherry production and forms one corner of the Sanlucar de Barrameda, Jerez and El Puerto triangular area of production. The cellars of the town still produce their wines using the traditional and classic system of "solera" production. The range of sherries produced include Pedro Ximénez, Moscatel, Amontillados and Olorosos.

The Ribera del Marisco is a popular street for eating, upstream from the ferry dock where one can catch the ferry across the bay to Cadiz, and is lined with a variety of seafood restaurants. The popular Romerijo has two take away areas; one for fried seafood and the other for non-fried seafood as well as more formal eating areas. The beach areas also have chiringuitos (beach bars) serving a variety of food.
