Benaocaz was founded
by the Moors in the 8th century. The first village
flourished under the protection of the castle
known today as Tavizna Castle which is 4 kms
from the village along the Rio Tavizna and is
now in ruins. Most of the village lies within
the boundaries of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural
Park whilst a small part belongs to the Alcornocales
Natural Park.
Other places of interest to visitors are
the remains of the Roman Road (Calzada Romana)
and the church (Iglesia Major).
Two kms outside
of Benaocaz is the Roman site of Ocuri, which
includes substantial remains of dwellings
and has fabulous views over the Sierra towards
the town of Ubrique. The site is currently
still being excavated.
Celebrations to honour the village patron
saint (San Blas) on the 3rd February date
back to the 17th century and the highlight
is the procession which features the performance
of traditional folkloric songs and dances
such as "la ferigonza" and "abandolao".
The offerings made to the saint, which include
chacinas (large pork sausages) are shared
out among those present.
Festivals include:
3 February San Blas patron saint festival
Holy Week/ Easter (Semana Santa)
Toro de Cuerda fair and festivities, 12 to
15 August: bulls run through the streets
and all manner of competitions are staged:
song and dance, typical dishes and trap shooting,
including the tiro del gallo (cockerel shoot)
named after the animal given as a prize to
the winner. |
