Algodonales
visitor information |
The
White village of Algodonales lies on the slopes
of the Lijar mountains and is well known amongst
hang gliding and para gliding enthusiasts. The
climate and number of day’s sunshine each
year makes it an ideal location for the practice
of air sports. Courses are available throughout
the year from beginners’ level for a
range of sports. Another extreme sport – that
of bungy jumping – takes place on the
Navas bridge, only 3kms from the village.
Within the village are the workshops of Antonio
Bernal and his uncle Valeriano Bernal, famed
for their production of both classical and
flamenco
guitars.
Nearby “La Muela” houses one of
the largest vulture colonies in Spain. Pleasant
walks may be enjoyed through the surrounding
forested countryside.

History
The history of the village dates back to 1566
when papal permission was granted to build the
Church of Saint Ana, although remains from both
the Neolithic and Roman periods have been found
nearby suggesting much earlier inhabitation. The
current church is from the much later eighteenth
century and Neoclassical in style.
The layout of the village follows an Arabic style
and adapts to the lower slopes of the surrounding
mountains, with the Plaza of Constitution and
the Church of Saint Ana being found in the heart
of the village. |
