The attractive town
of Prado del Rey is located between the mountains
of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park and the
more open countryside landscape of pasture and
farmland, where cereals and olive trees are cultivated.
A pre-Roman village from the Neolithic period
existed at La Cabeza de Hortales, which was
later occupied by the Romans, who named it
Iptuci. It was destroyed by Alfonso VII's troops
in 1133. The archaeological remains of Iptuci
are outside the village centre.
The present-day town was founded by Charles
III in 1768, as part of the repopulation plan
for the south of Andalusia. Land was divided
among 189 settlers from the Grazalema and Ronda
sierras. In 1883, the municipal charter covering
the New Towns was abolished and the land became
the property of the colonists. So, in addition
to exhibiting the typical features of a white
village, it consists of straight regular steeply
sloping streets laid out around a central square
that are characteristic of this type of town.
Other features of interest include Our Lady's
Parish Church (Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra
Señora del Carmen) built in 1830 and
the Farm Workers' Granary (Pósito de
Labradores), a wheat storehouse dating back
to 1790.
